What lot size should I use on gold?

Gold moves far more than forex: with the wrong lot a normal stop can wipe half your account. Enter your balance, risk and stop.

How gold lot size is calculated

On XAUUSD the stop isn't measured in pips but in dollars of price. Entry at 2,400 and stop at 2,395 is a $5 distance. With 1 lot (100 ounces) every dollar of movement is $100.

Lot = risk $ ÷ (stop distance $ × 100)

Example: $5,000 account, 1% risk ($50), $5 stop:

50 ÷ (5 × 100) = 0.10 lots

If the stop is hit you lose $50. With a full lot, that same stop would be $500: 10% of the account on one trade.

FAQ

How much is 1 lot of gold worth?

With most brokers 1 lot of XAUUSD is 100 ounces: every $1 the price moves is $100 profit or loss.

How much is 0.01 lots of gold?

0.01 lots is 1 ounce: every $1 gold moves you make or lose $1. A $20 move (normal in a day) is $20 with 0.01 and $2,000 with 1 lot.

How many pips is $1 on gold?

It depends on the broker: some call 0.01 a pip, others 0.10. To keep it simple this calculator measures the stop directly in dollars of price, which is the same everywhere.

Do all brokers use 100 ounces per lot?

Most do, but some use 10 or 1 ounce. Check it in MT5: right-click XAUUSD → Specification → "Contract size", and change it in the calculator if it's different.
